Service & Justice

The Board of Mission and Social Action actively seeks opportunities to help and heal our community’s needs

We offer a variety of possibilities to serve the local and global community through donated funds, services, gifts, and time. We have more information about our specific service or advocacy opportunities below.

Reading Changes Lives

A wide-ranging small group social justice ministry proclaiming and  promoting literacy as a basic human right. Current activities and interests include: Trick-or-Treat for Books , Story and “Poet-Tree” Walks, A Little Free Library, Book Fairs, Reading with New Immigrants, Book Groups, Free Book Swap Cart, Our constantly curated library on our Adams Street Campus.

Father Bill's

Every month, members from our congregation sponsor a meal and bag lunches at Father Bill’s MainSpring campus in Brockton. Support can range from preparing bagged lunches, to shopping for dinner items at Costco (costs are reimbursed), to driving/delivering all food items to Father Bills (takes place on the Saturday before the 4th Sunday of every month).

Clothing Donation Shed

Our Adams Street Campus hosts a Clothing Donation Shed in the side parking lot in partnership with St. Pauly Textiles, Inc. Your clothing donations are welcome and are redistributed to people and organizations, here in the U.S. and in developing countries.

Pine Street Inn

The Pine Street staff serve hot meals every evening and appreciate assistance, and we offer up to 6 volunteers who have travel to Pine Street Inn on the second Friday of each month. We meet at the church at 4:15 pm and carpool to Pine Street to don caps, wear aprons, and gloves (provided) and help serve 170 to 220 hungry souls. Since dessert is usually not included, we bring 18 dozen large cookies purchased at Costco and accept donations to cover the cost.

Mental Health Team

The United Congregational Church Mental Health Support Team works to reduce stigma and promote the inclusion of people with mental illnesses/brain disorders and their families. We have sponsored mental health sermon series, testimonies, and support groups. In 2025, our congregation voted to become a WISE congregation, solidifying our commitment to be an inclusive place for people with mental health challenges. Our work continues as we seek to reduce stigma, offer support groups, share resources, and be a place where all can truly belong.

LGBTQ+ Inclusion and Affirmation Team

United Congregational Church is an Open and Affirming Church, meaning we support the full inclusion and participation of LGBTQ+ persons in the life of the church.

The LGBTQ+ Inclusion and Affirmation Team works to help our congregation more fully live into what it means to be an Open and Affirming congregation.

Sustainability/Green Team

The Sustainability/Green Team helps lead our church in our call to care for all of God’s creation. From introducing composting at coffee hour to helping think of ways our buildings can have a smaller carbon footprint, this team is always seeking ways we can be good stewards of the Earth.
